PETITION TO HAWAII STATE LEGISLATURE re DEPLETED URANIUM TESTING AND CLEAN-UP

Whereas, according to many leading scientists and the US Army’s own regulations, testing of soldiers exposed to Depleted Uranium weapons is required, and whereas removal of DU weapons from Hawaii is urgently needed for the reasons that depleted uranium weapons 1) are novel weapons of great penetrative and destructive power, 2) are composed of radioactive components, 3) are ecological pollutants for millions of years, and 4) are indiscriminate weapons of mass destruction that continue to sicken, cause birth defects in and kill innocent civilians, we the undersigned urgently petition the Legislature of the State of Hawaii to immediately enact a bill or bills calling for:

            1.  state-of-the-art-testing for returning Hawaii National Guard soldiers to be fully funded and made available to such soldiers returning from overseas deployment,

            2.    full disclosure by the military of all sites in Hawaii where depleted uranium weapons have been tested, practice-fired or otherwise stored, and

            3. safe handling and disposal on all the Hawaiian islands of all Depleted Uranium shells or other DU residue according to the strictest regulations for hazardous waste clean-up sites.
